Please Use the Correct Oak Tree!

Mayor Libby Schaaf helps rescue famous Oakland oak tree

Our indigenous, eponymous species of oak tree is Quercus agrifolia, “Coast Live Oak.” Probably the most famous example is the Jack London Oak growing on Frank Ogawa Plaza (City Hall Plaza).

Note that its leaves are oval and spiny:

SO WHY OH WHY DEAR PEOPLE DO WE KEEP USING THE WRONG OAK SPECIES IN PICTURES AND DEPICTIONS???

Our Lady of Oakland–we pray you please save us from these wrong oak leaves!

Artists probably Google “oak leaf” and pick some leaf that “looks” more distinctively oak-y, maybe one of these:

Valley Oak (Q. lobata)

White Oak (Q. alba)
Pin Oak (Q. palustris)
Quercus kelloggii | Plant leaves, Plants, Leaves
Black Oak (Q. kelloggii)

But no, not any of these! Please use the right oak tree!

Three cheers to Oaklandish for getting it right!
