Oaktown! 1852

2012; expanded 2016

Bulletin board paper, construction paper, double stick tape, suspended from EMT pipes and wallboard edging

This was a window shade project for a space at Youth Employment Partnership in Oakland. The 2016 updating added the two images of Lake Merritt.

Center: An adaptation of the official flag of the City of Oakland, substituting “OAKTOWN!” for “OAKLAND.” The year 1852 was when the city was founded.

Right side: Port container crane, Alameda County Courthouse (1934), Tribune Tower (1923), Kaiser Center (1960; the only building depicted here from an angle and not a straight profile)

Left side: City Hall (1914), Edoff Memorial Band Stand (1923), Federal Buildings (1994), YEP Building (built 1950 for Volunteers of America)—note new rooftop solar installation (2013)

Lake Merritt is depicted on the far left with its present shoreline; and on the far right as San Antonio Slough, mapped 1857 by the Survey of the Coast of the United States. Note especially the much-wider channel out to the Bay (was even wider including wetlands).
